Real steel 2011 full movie dailymotion season. There was a Japanese anime series, it must have been back in the early 90's, that was about schoolkids programming miniature-sized robots to fight. I forget the name. The kids controlled from ring-side and every episode pretty much culminated with a fight. A lot of the dramatic tension came from the kids - and us - developing affection for our robot as it suffered some punishment that looked beyond repair. The fights themselves had some wuxia finesse.
You have to keep in mind this was a time before console gaming was the norm it is now, so we got our vicarious thrills by watching someone else play.
Now this being the Hollywood version, it has been pumped up with blockbuster hormones: robots are bigger and badder, fights are louder and more senseless, modeled after the extremely abrasive metallic havoc of the Transformers films.
The Japanese angle is given a nod to, insofar as what we're led to believe will be our robot to root for is Japanese and styled like a samurai warrior. But he gets totally destroyed in his first fight, by what looks like a robot programmed to fight in a 'dirty/street' MMA style. No, our main robot is - what else - going to be another Rocky underdog, dealing in good old-fashioned American boxing.
Now by itself, this only prefigures that it's going to be one more obnoxiously loud action flick. We trust we'll be able to accommodate it as we do WWE and spinoffs: a dumb, brutish show about the staging of a dumb, brutish show. A matter of simply bad taste, that we choose to indulge or don't. A no-brainer.
You will notice however that Spielberg is involved here as producer. If you didn't, you will know by the end. And you can tell that nothing ended up in the film without personally stamped as okay, that or it's the work of a sycophant. So Hugh Jackman plays another sloppy, careless dad - ex-boxer of some talent dontcha know - who will have to be taught about good parenting. Naturally there is an estranged son, who we know will steer his father into responsibility. There's a woman involved, from a completely vanilla position. A shrill step mother. And naturally, a cute play-thing for the kid to bond with in place of actual family.
This might have been salvageable from Spielberg's junkyard of spare parts, if for this little tweak: ordinary dramatic situations between father and son transferred to the bots they control, and visually exemplified for a change using battle dynamics. Emotional growth mapped to actual mechanics. In turn quoting the boorish nature of the show we have come to watch.
No such thing here. On top of wham-bang steel destruction, we get vulgar wishy-washiness: the dad doesn't keep the kid like we thought he would, the underdog doesn't win the big fight like it would be ordinary, but the film celebrates both like they did and with a bathetic paroxysm. Small guy triumphs in the hearts of the people.
So I presume this was going to be Spielberg's genre film for the year and he decided to pass on it at the last minute, either because he has another robot film lined up for next year, or because he wanted to concentrate on the loftier Horse. What happens? The naive worldview is Spielberg's, a man who understands very little about the world but a lot about how to fabricate that into massive art, and the actual fabrication is relegated to unambitious technicians, whereas Spielberg may have provided something of interest.
We lose on both counts and are stuck with this.
